In the Compressor

The compressor forces the refrigerant through all the components of the refrigeration system. The refrigerant in the compressor is a vapor with a low temperature and low pressure. The compressor compresses it, forcing the molecules together into a smaller volume. In this small space, the molecules collide more often, converting their kinetic energy into heat. As a result, the refrigerant increases in internal energy, enthalpy, temperature and pressure.

In the Condenser

The condenser rejects all the unwanted heat from the building and compressor. The refrigerant enters as a superheated vapor at high pressure and temperature, then passes along the tubes of the condenser, where fans blow off heat from the refrigerant. As the refrigerant cools down, it condenses into a liquid. It leaves the condenser as a high-pressure liquid, but cooler and with lower enthalpy and entropy. In the Evaporator

The refrigerant then reaches the expansion valve, which controls its flow into the evaporator. The valve allows some refrigerant to flow as part-liquid and part-vapor. As it passes through, it expands in pressure and temperature, after which it heads straight into the evaporator.

In the evaporator, another fan blows the warm air of the room across the Carrier evaporator coil. The warm air allows the cool refrigerant to absorb more energy and boil it into a vapor.
